What are Dark Circles?

One major effect of aging or unhygienic lifestyle is dark circles. They may make a person look old, tired, stressed, sick and depressed. But, what are dark circles? Dark circles are the dark blemishes around the eyes. There may be many causes for it that may include heredity and bruising.

It is believed that dark circles are the second most common dermatological problem and the most common non-hormonal skin problem. Another question apart from what are dark circles is how they are caused. Dark circles are caused by leaking capillaries. The capillaries are so small that red blood cells may have to line up, single file, to get through. The red blood cells may get lost wandering into the surrounding skin. The enzymes in the body after breaking down the red blood cells including hemoglobin may get left with components having a dark blue-black color. The skin around the eyes being thinnest as compared to rest of the body and the capillaries being present near the skin’s surface may make the dark circles evident.
